Suite One Studio

I learned of Suite One Studio through Becca’s Edit post… and since then, I’ve fallen totally in love with Lindsay Emery’s work. If you’ve ever thrown a pot, you know how difficult it can be to work in ceramics, and Lindsay’s amazing eye and appreciation for quality is apparent in every aspect of her line.

While speaking with Lindsay , one of the things that stood out to me is that after falling in love with pottery in college, she bought a wheel and started practicing – throwing and scrapping pots over and over again. She didn’t have a kiln to fire these pieces, so she literally had nothing to show for her work. Regardless of what you think of the ten-thousand hour rule, this shows a true commitment and dedication to the craft. What would you do over and over again just for fun? Is there a way to create a career out of that?

suite-one-studio-pour-bowlHOW DID YOU DECIDE ON YOUR CAREER PATH?

In 2007, I got a Kitchenaid stand mixer and it came with a one-year subscription to Food & Wine Magazine. I saw that the F&W editorial was filled with beautiful pottery and had a lightbulb moment – seeing props like that solved a question I had had about my artistic path. It made me realize that I wanted to be, and could be, a potter. Food & Wine is still a major source of inspiration today…. And I’ve come full circle and had my work in the magazine!

suite-one-studio-burlap-platterHOW DID YOU MOVE FROM ARTIST TO BUSINESS?

In 2010 I moved to Greensboro, North Carolina and made a promise to myself– “No matter what, I’m not going to get a job. No matter what, I’m going to make pots and make that my career.” I started to consider the work I was doing as a business, not just as an artistic endeavor. It was a totally different way to look at my work.

I love that I am able to explore artistic spontaneity – I can make what I want, whenever I want to make it. But while I am an artist with a collection, I also need to act as a business owner managing a brand. Social media has been great because I am able to meet people who approach things with the same sense of seriousness as I do.

suite-one-studio-nesting-bowl-charcoalWHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I’m inspired by local antique shops and consignment stores – looking through tableware of the past. It has been helpful for me to see what people have used and made in the past. It answers a lot of questions about what will work in my collection.

What I’m making is related to what was made in the past. I like that. That’s a good thing.

I’m a terrible interviewer…Lindsay and I spoke for quite a while, but I was a little too engaged in the conversation to take good notes! For more, check out Lindsay’s blog and at some point, we’ll share a part 2! Thanks, Lindsay!

Maison du Soir

After years of sleeping in anything and everything that i could find/that was clean/that was soft, I finally realized it was time for me to get some new sleepwear. Like the rest of my wardrobe, I wanted fewer, better options – who wants to think about what to wear, to sleep?! The caveat – the sleepwear had to be comfortable, it had to be cute but not overwhelmingly so, and it had to be easy to care for. I went through multiple brands that were not quite right – too delicate, too warm, etc., before I discovered Maison du Soir. The sleepwear is incredible, of course, but, even better, designer Courtney has such a vision and is so passionate about what she is doing that I know the line will just get better. Read on to learn a little bit more about Courtney and Maison du Soir and then go check out the rest of her collection!

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

In life…people’s unique stories and the idea that anything is possible.  Life can be harsh but it can also be so breath taking. In art…beautiful photography and that both the simplest and most complex emotions can be portrayed without speech.  In design…Contrasts …I love old mixed with new, soft and subtle with hard edges, blush pink with ink black, rose gold with black diamonds, pristine white walls with reclaimed wood.  I find beauty in simplicity and respect for things with a deeper meaning.

WHAT MADE YOU START MAISON DU SOIR?

I knew there was something bigger out there for me.  After establishing brands for companies I have worked for, it was time to make my own vision come to life.   I also found an appreciation of beautiful sleepwear and couldn’t figure out why it was so hard to find a quality sleepwear brand that was also fashionable.

WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND MAISON DU SOIR?

The name Maison Du Soir is French for “House of Evening”…the use of “house” is an ode to the old European fashion houses and “soir” beyond it’s direct meaning, has a notion of party and fantasy in the word “Soiree”.   Beyond the name, the design inspiration started at common sense…why didn’t current sleepwear offerings echo our changing trends in daywear?  Why were the silhouettes boxy when my jeans were skin tight and my blouses flattering?  The collection is an attempt to bridge that gap.  It’s also an attempt to show people that they should be treating themselves as nicely when they go to sleep as they do when they go to work.  You shouldn’t be blog worthy by day and ragamuffin by night.

WHAT DRIVES YOU?

The stories of others who have started small and through hard work, have accomplished great feats.

WHAT MAKES YOUR DAY?

A good cup of coffee and good person.

WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE ESSENTIALS?

Unique jewelry can make any plain outfit look that much better.  I’m a fan of K/ller jewelry.

WHAT IS NEXT?

Maison Du Soir growth…possibly unisex travel accessories and MDS for men. The boyfriend has asked for that next!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?

I’ve learned that there are ups and downs in a new business.  You just have to weather the downs and remember the ups.  Hoping that next time you ask me what I have learned, I say “eventually the ups and downs even themselves out ”

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE HAS BEEN MOST HELPFUL TO YOU / WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER MAKERS?

“Don’t give up” covers a lot…if your factory sucks…find another one, if someone doesn’t like your product…take good notes (and then tell your BF they are stupid!), if you want to throw in the towel…don’t.  Sometimes you just have to focus on putting one foot in front of the other and that can truly help.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SHOP?

I shop my favorite brands in many different places and for unique pieces in boutiques.  Some of my best finds have been Court in NY and Satine in LA.

WHY DO YOU MAKE MAISON DU SOIR?

Because it’s something that I believe is missing and that women deserve.

maison-du-soir-sleepwear-grey-heatherWHY DO YOU MANUFACTURE IN AMERICA?

Because it’s home.  Simple as that.  You start where you feel most comfortable and my intention is to stay as long as America will have me. The ultimate goal is to give back to a place that has given so much to me.

WHY DOES MANUFACTURING IN AMERICA BENEFIT YOUR BUSINESS?

It allows me quality control, to see the factory conditions first hand, reduces shipping fees, no duty fees and shorter leadtimes to name a few.

WHY IS MAISON DU SOIR DIFFERENT/SPECIAL?

It’s different because there is not much else out there like it.  It’s a sleepwear collection that echoes designer daywear style and aesthetic.  The pieces are designed with the intention to look as good in sunlight as they do in moonlight.

It’s special because it was born from a vision, a passion and an understanding of what could ease the pains of a difficult day.

Elizabeth Dehn for One Love Organics

Elizabeth Dehn, or, as you may know her, Beauty Bets, has been my beauty savior in Minneapolis. If she recommends it, I try it, and she hasn’t had a miss yet. So when she partnered with One Love Organics to launch Elizabeth Dehn for One Love Organics, I knew the line would be amazing… However, I didn’t realize quite how special each product would be until I tried them. I’m the ultimate skincare snob, and these are some of the most luxurious and impactful beauty products I’ve used – it’s hard to believe that they are truly all-natural. After reading her blog for the better part of a decade, it was so fun to sit down with her and learn more about her and the line.

What are your style essentials?

A men’s vintage watch – always. Statement jewelry. A great pair of jeans. Any shirt where I can pop the collar. Nerdy glasses. Lashes. (n.b. – Elizabeth’s lashes are what dreams are made of.)

What have you learned?

You have to be yourself and you have to trust your instincts no matter what. There will always be people doing what you want to do – you have to follow your own path.

ED-for-OLO-3

What gets you through the day/through the week?

People. The brilliant, kind, real, big-hearted women I work with.

What drives you?

The desire for freedom. To travel. I work so much now so that I won’t have to later.

How do you escape?

The spa, as often as possible, for regular facials and massages. I believe everyone deserves some form of that – even if it is just 15 minutes of meditation or washing your face at night. It’s the only time of the week where I don’t have to be on.

ED-for-OLO-2

Why do you support Made in America and independent brands?

I know how much work and heart and creativity went into getting that product into my hands. I respect the craft from start to finish immensely. Creating a product, taking it to market and being successful is on of the hardest things to do and the biggest risk a person can take.

Who inspires you?

My business partner Suzanne from One Love Organics. I’ve never met a harder working person in my life. She is also eternally optimistic in a realistic way – which is probably one of the greatest traits an entrepreneur can have.

After meeting Elizabeth, I’m an even bigger fan of Beauty Bets and OLO than I was before… Meeting someone you admire can be tricky – what if they don’t live up to your expectations? But Elizabeth is as kind, funny, and inspiring as she comes across on her blog and in this interview. Her mission to empower women through beauty? That’s legit – that’s just who she is. The only thing that surprised me after meeting her? Her skin seriously glows in real life. I didn’t know it was possible to have skin like that… Must be that face mist!

I’m so excited for more and more people to discover the amazingness that is ED for OLO! Because OLO gets us, they sell sample packs for $5.95!

PS – even Garance loves ED for OLO!

Hackwith Design x Parc Boutique

I am so excited to share today’s collaboration with you! A few weeks ago, Wing and I got together with Lisa Hackwith of Hackwith Design House and Thao Nguyen of Parc Boutique to learn more about their upcoming trunk show.

parc-x-hackwith-5

Thao is the amazing owner of Minneapolis’ Parc Boutique. Parc carries an incredible mix of accessible quality brands and unique handmade exclusive items and Thao does a fantastic job curating an assortment of products by local makers (luckily for you, everything is available online!) and providing exceptional service. (Parc was probably my very first introduction to boutique shopping… so it’s safe to say that Thao created a monster:)

Lisa is the equally amazing designer and maker behind Hackwith Design House. Lisa just re-launched her line after a brief hiatus and focuses on her belief that one’s favorite item of clothing is special and unique. Given that belief, she makes less than 25 of each item so that you always know that you are wearing a unique piece (and releases one item a week – oh the anticipation!)

Again, good people making good things… that could be the new tagline for TAE.

Lisa and Thao met while Lisa was shopping at Parc, and over time decided to create a collaborative collection. The Spring collection sold out almost immediately so they have expanded the line and are introducing it at a trunk show – tonight!

parc-x-hackwith2

This sweater is amazing. Thao and Lisa hand-selected the fabrics and then Lisa sewed it – by hand! – in her studio. It’s unique, soft, and versatile. We got so excited over the sweaters that they decided to make additional options – I can’t wait to see those! That’s the amazing thing about working with American-made, local designers – product is not only thoughtfully made, but it can often be turned around incredibly quickly.

parc-x-hackwith-4

Lisa sits at this sunny desk in her studio and sews all day!  When we visited, she was finishing up production of her fall line which launched last week and working on samples of her spring line for Minneapolis Fashion Week.

parc-x-hackwith-3

I’m such a sucker for cohesive branding – particularly when I’m shopping online because it’s one of the few ways that the shop can really connect with me as a customer – and Lisa’s is amazing.

parc-x-hackwith-6

If you are in Minneapolis, I hope to see you tonight! If not, be sure to check out instagram as I’m sure we’ll all be ‘gramming up a storm!

Thank you to Lisa and Thao for collaborating to create such an amazing line! And of course to Wing for the amazing photos!
